The Suffolk County Police Department reported that the crash happened shortly after 3 a.m. west of Exit 56 in Hauppauge.

Police said Derrick Louis, age 24, of Westbury, was eastbound in a Nissan Altima when his car struck the back of a Freightliner box truck. The Altima then went off the road into the woods, and then struck a tree.

Louis was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital and was listed in critical condition, according to police.

A 24-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Altima was also treated at the hospital for minor injuries. Police said the 33-year-old man driving the Freightliner was not injured.

The Altima was impounded after the crash for a safety check, and the Freightliner was inspected at the scene, police added.

Investigators are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
